I have, in my repertoire, 5 or 6 different talks on topics ranging from humour in the workplace, humor and stress management, to the importance of a positive attitude. I collect humour on all these topics and file them under many subject headings. At present I have literally hundreds of short humour pieces filed in my collection.

Whenever I am preparing a talk I go to my files and select a number of appropriate humour pieces to work into the content of the talk. Where do I find my humour? Well, I have become a real humour hound over the years. I look for funny material while I read newspapers, watch television, listen to the radio or have a coffee at the local coffee shop. No place is off limits.
I have developed the habit of always carrying a pen and notebook with me wherever I go. When I see something funny I immediately jot it down in my notebook. I just include enough words to give me the story line. It helps me recall the incident when I do get home and have more time to flesh it out and enter it into my Laughter Log.
This has become an accepted practice among my friends. When we are out together and something funny happens I take out the trusty notebook and start writing. As always happens someone in the group says, "Good Lord, there he goes again. Today we're in the notebook, tomorrow we'll be in a new book or speech." That's the hazard of hanging with me.
Let me give you an example of a situation that happened while I was having a coffee one morning at our local Tim Horton's (Canada's famous coffee shop). A smartly dressed man entered talking on his cell phone looking and sounding very authoritative and important. He seemed to be really enjoying the attention he was getting from the people around him. As he stood there in all his self-perceived glory he finally noticed what many of us had already noticed... HIS FLY WAS OPEN and a piece of his white shirt was sticking out for all to see. When he became aware of the situation he took off, like a bat out of hell, for the washroom and emerged a few minutes later a chastened and more humble man.
I immediately took out my notebook and recorded what had just happened. This funny story is now used in my talks on leadership and human relations and the people love it. Become a humour hound and keep a laughter Log. You won't be sorry and your talks and conversations will be richer for it.
