Viz Magazine - Where Humour Meets Wit

Viz magazine is a renowned British comic magazine which has been in existence since 1979. Viz mocks the formal British comics of the post-war period, primarily the Beano and the Dandy but with a bizarre language, black comedy surreal humour and either sexual or violent storyline. The magazine also spoofs tabloid newspapers with mockeries of articles and letter pages. Though Viz does not have a particular political standing, it occasionally satires current events and politicians.

Viz's success has led to the appearance of numerous rivals which posed a challenge to the magazine's popularity. The fourth most popular magazine experienced a fall in average sales in 2009 which was partly due to the fact that the magazine increased its price along with now being published monthly. This fall in circulation and rise in cover charges have been brought up in the magazine itself, by disgruntled contributors to the letters page.

Celebrating 25 years of Viz, cartoonist Graham Dury, in a recently released edition of coffee table book, was caught exhibiting a hoax, "We pride ourselves on the fact that you're no cleverer when you've read Viz. You might have had a few laughs, but you've not learnt anything".

Like several other magazines, Viz too has had its share of controversies. McDonald's, during an advertising campaign in 1996, was accused of plagiarizing several viz top tips. One such top tip that McDonald's imitated is as under:

· Save a fortune on laundry bills. Give your dirty shirts to Oxfam. They will wash and iron them, and then you can buy them back for 50p" - Viz Top Tip

· Save a fortune on laundry bills. Give your dirty shirts to a second-hand shop. They will wash and iron them, and then you can buy them back for 50p"- McDonald's advert

The case was, however, settled out of court for an undisclosed sum, but several Viz readers believe that the magazine had given out the permissions for using top tips.
