I think we would all agree that humour sells. Just look at television commercials as an example. The ones we remember and don't mind seeing over and over again are the funny ones.

There was a study done a few years ago which looked at the attention paid to and retention of academic content by university students. If this study is valid it verifies my long held belief that if you want to make people listen to you and remember what you said make them laugh.
When you apply this to marketing and sales you realize that the use of humour not only gets your customer's attention, but also helps them remember you and your message long after you have left the scene. What's more they will buy your product or service.
People buy from those they like, respect and trust so it only stands to reason that happy, humourous, smiling company representatives are powerful promotional and selling agents. So hire people with these qualities and train those working for you who don't have them. Remember a sense of humour is a learned response, it isn't genetic.
People are attracted to those with a great sense of humour and a cheerful disposition. It also creates a spirit of co-operation, mutual support and teamwork among your salesforce. They have a strong sense of working together as a team for a common purpose.
Humour has been called "Social Glue" because of its power to bond people to one another. People do gravitate to those who laugh easily and have a great sense of humour. Isn't that what you want from your salesforce? You want them to bond with your customers or clients and your clients to bond with them. When they do then they will continue to come back for future purchases. Humour is the perfect bonding tool for this purpose.

Here are a few humour suggestions for you to consider.
* Provide in-service for your employees on humour as a marketing and sales tool and provide instruction on how they can develop their own sense of humor. Instruction is important because you don't want your sales reps to giving a 15 minute comedy routine with the focus on themselves. You want the humour to build relationships and focus on your product or service.
* Distribute humourous promotional items to your clients and customers. Note pads, coffee cups, pens etc.
* Begin your sales or department meetings with humour. I always suggest that managers start their meetings with the question," What is the funniest thing that happened to you this past week?"
* Have frequent "Lunch and Laugh" sessions.
* Encourage your staff to develop humourous logos and slogans for their department. Give a prize to the people who come up with the funniest.
* Have a lunch room humour bulletin board. Encourage people to post funny cartoons, short funny one-liners etc.
I would like to leave you with a quote I always share with my audiences whenever I speak. " Humour makes great things happen." Give it a try and watch the fantastic results.
